Spreadsheet as User Interface for Business Intelligence
Taking the Best of Each World - Spreadsheets as a BI Tool Front End
Despite Business Intelligence (BI) providers’ and IT departments’ efforts to substitute spreadsheets by trusted BI solutions, it is estimated that up to 90 percent of end users use spreadsheet applications to import information obtained from BI tools and work with it locally.
New requirements in data analysis and decision-making support that cannot be handled by traditional spreadsheets or by the usual BI tools have forced the market to evolve, taking three distinctive approaches: Standalone BI packages, spreadsheets as BI tools, and mixed approaches.
All these solutions aim to make BI more accessible to end users in what could be named a new “Democratic BI”. This is more than a tooling decision; its implementation needs a complete strategy covering governance, security, and infrastructure.
This whitepaper from Atos’ Scientific Community looks at the weaknesses of spreadsheets and BI Tools and how the BI Market has reacted before putting forward Atos’ vision on Democratic BI and the support Atos can provide based on its years of experience in successfully delivering BI solutions.
